One of the longest and most successful ministries at First Calvary Baptist Church has been the First Calvary Prison Ministry. In 1984 the congregation made a positive step for its local ministry by beginning a Prison Ministry Bible Study correspondence program that is still going on to this day. This ministry has recorded over 2300 professions of faith from behind prison walls since its inception. Although many have taken part in the ministry through the years, Gene and Earline Thompson were at the helm for many years. In 2007 Earline went to be with the Lord and Gene has continued the good work with the help of Gail Smith, Lea Hawn, Barbara Smith, Alice Loghry, Suzie Grusendorf and a host of part-time volunteers. The ministry mails Bible studies to those behind bars and to their family members when requested by the incarcerated. Those taking the course send the finished lessons back for grading and the next lesson is sent out. The response to the Word has been great and many owe their salvation to the Grace of God and the work of the FCBC Prison Ministry. An interesting effect of the mail program has been the many envelopes hand-decorated by the prisoners. The Prison Ministry office has two frames of envelopes, mostly decorated in a religious theme. As Jesus said in a parable, “... Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40 First Calvary believes that we must minister to the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick … and to those in prison. |
